About

An outlet for all my thoughts on the novels I’ve read. Book reviews very rarely sway me on whether or not I decide to read a book, I pay closer attention to what the novel is actually about. But that doesn’t mean the reviews aren’t interesting. I find them the most interesting after I’ve already read the novel –Β  it’s good to see if other readers were as amused, confused, enraged or devastated by the contents in the same way that I was.

If any readers out there follow this, remember to comment as I’m always grateful for the conversation!

  1. Completely agree with you about the use of reviews. Awesome site, I’m definitely following you, and great list of books to read too!

  2. I’m the same. Reading reviews gets me excited about a book but I take what I read with a grain of salt. Just recently started writing reviews myself, I feel in part to give back to the book reviewing community. Thanks for your reviews!

    • Hi Phoebe, thanks for reading, I’ve just been nosing about on your blog and enjoyed it. It’s very modern and clean looking which I like- makes it easier to read and it’s cool you have a star rating system. I noticed on your read page you’ve listed Sophie Kinsella’s I’ve got your number, that one is on my to-read list, perhaps we can write reviews and compare?

I particularly liked your review of Alone In Berlin, I can see from your first few reviews that not only has your writing matured but the books you’ve chosen to review have grown in complexity, you will only improve as you continue so good on you. On the other hand the books you have written reviews on don’t yet match your reading list of 2013 or those you’ve read on the BBC Top 100. I’m following your blog so it will be interesting to see how you write about a Kinsella novel or science fiction.

If you want to discuss books and writing more feel free to email me.

      Happy reading,

      Gem

Thank you so much for this! It was so kind of you to spend time writing me a message. Your blog is the kind of book blog I aspire to have, so its so helpful having someone like you give me feedback!

My reading list of 2013 , although shows books I have read, I don’t think my reviews of them would be as high a quality because I have quite a bad memory for book details (one of the reasons I started this blog), But I will find a solution!

I read I’ve Got Your Number on holiday at Christmas in about two days, its hilarious, charming and very very easy to read, if you need a break from more heavy books. I’m definitely trying to find more Kinsella books, and definitely let me know what you thought about I’ve Got Your Number!

        Thanks again for your feedback,
        Phoebe

      • Not a problem, happy to help a fellow reader and blogger! My top tip for writing the best review possible is to carry a notepad, a pen and a pack of post-its everywhere you take your book/ Kindle, that way you jot down comments, ideas, opinions etc and don’t have to remember them =)

        Happy reading, Gem

I do the exact same thing. I read reviews after I’ve read the book. I don’t want to have a biased opinion before I’ve even opened the book. I love getting book recommendations so this blog is amazing! πŸ™‚

Love reading your blog. I am not sure if you are interested in multi-touch iBooks. I have taken a slightly different route to other authors by choosing this format for my new YA fantasy novel. Features include stunning photography, cinematic soundtrack and HD video. You can check out the book trailer on my new website and blog at http://www.swordofair.net.

    Take care

One book that I have recently read and isn’t on your list is “The Martian” by Andy Weir. In my opinion it is a gripping tale that peaks the interest of all. Being a student of science the accuracy of the tests and objectives portrayed in this novel are amazing to read about. The author did a beautiful job with this novel and it receives top marks! I highly recommend this novel to you, and yes, it is better than the movie.
